This research team created training for trans and gender-diverse mental health care. The project was student-driven and designed to improve the training of clinical psychologists related to EDI, social justice and cultural humility. The team partnered with the Skipping Stone Foundation to design a trans-affirming mental health-care workshop for students, faculty and staff. The team also created an accessible mental health service at UCalgary’s Psychology Clinic for trans and gender-diverse people who often experience higher rates of mental-health difficulties compared to their cisgender peers.

MHEALTH COMMUNITY WORKSHOP
On October 22, 2022, Dr. Fiona Schulte and her team hosted a virtual community workshop on #childhoodcancer survivorship in collaboration with Fuselight Creative and Cambian. This was a knowledge mobilization initiative stemming from a multi-site patient-oriented research project investigating the aftercare experience of survivors of childhood cancer. We invited survivors of childhood cancer, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and researchers to exchange knowledge on ways to enhance the survivorship experience. Information gathered will inform the development of a Canada-wide platform to educate, engage, and connect survivors on their aftercare. This research is funded by the CIHR Catalyst Grant in Patient-Oriented Research.

CAPO/IPOS WORLD CONGRESS
What an honour it was to host the CAPO/IPOS World Congress in Banff this month. Over 600 attendees representing close to 50 countries from around the globe right in our backyard.
Keynote presentations addressed (a) Cancer Moonshot (Dr. Howard Krein); (b) Patient Engagement in cancer research and care (SickBoys); (c) implementation science for improved pediatric health research and care (Dr. Christine Chambers); and (d) cancer care in indigenous populations (Dr. Gail Garvey). Invited symposia include specific topics focused on 1) patient engagement/advocacy in research and clinical care; 2) exercise; and 3) technology. Speakers representing international expertise for these symposiums have been confirmed.
And, for the first time ever, the World Congress was ‘Patients Included’. This meant that we were “committed to incorporating the experience of patients as experts in living with cancer, while ensuring they were neither excluded nor exploited.” In order to achieve the Patients Included status, the conference must meet five key criteria of the Patients Included conference charter. One of these criteria is that scholarships are provided by the conference to allow patients and/or care-givers to attend the meeting as delegates. Through the generous support of our sponsors, including the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research and Kids Cancer Care Foundation, we had 5 patient and family members who were the successful recipients of these scholarships.
